This video is from “The Last Dance”, a documentary about arguably one of the best basketball players to ever play the game Michael Jordan. In this video specifically, he explains how he approached every single practice, workout session, and game. He was the ultimate competitor and he pushed his teammates to be successful every day. He was very passionate about pursuing excellence in every little aspect of the game. His passion showed in the expectations he placed on himself and his teammates. He expected all of his teammates to play the game a certain way so that they all could enjoy success in the end. Some people would say that he was the biggest jerk or a bad teammate because of the way he would push his teammates, but this leadership style ultimately led to team success for years. Jordan’s leadership style was setting an example, holding his teammates accountable, and being passionate about everything he did.

This video is from the 2008 BCS game where the Florida Gators and Oklahoma Sooners battle it out for a championship. In this video, Tim Tebow, the quarterback for the Florida Gators, is trying to motivate and pump up his team during halftime. Tebow was a fiery competitor, doing whatever it took to win games. He’s played through many injuries, has switched positions, and even switched sports to be able to compete. Tebow is a good leader for many reasons, his passion for the game is shown every day which rubs off on his teammates. He was tough on his teammates, however, Tebow was never seen as a bad person as he displayed his beliefs constantly. Tebow was the biggest advocator of playing through Christ, he put bible verses on his face and shoes. Tebow is a great leader as he pushes everyone around him to not only be better players but better people as well. His passion for the game makes him not allow himself to fail.

This video is about the former college football player and now motivational speaker Inky Johnson. In this video Inky tells his story about how he came from nothing but worked his way up to achieve his dreams and goals. He then explains his career ending injury and explains how everything happens for a reason and that no matter whats going on its never just about you. The way he was still there for his team and continues to be there and motivate kids and athletes all around the world shows his amazing leadership talent. I believe tat even tho Inky’s career was short lived, he continues to be one of the best leaders with just his words. He motivates by giving off that energy of “you will get through it”. The hardships and career ending injury that Inky went through gives him that grit and experience to give this amazing advice and motivation. Everything that Inky shows are all great examples of a great leader.

I chose the clip below of Ray Lewis because I believe it encompassed many different characteristics of what a leader should look like. Ray Lewis was focused on the team and “their fight” they had to fight. His main points focused on rallying together as a team no matter if they won or lost. I also believe that a leader inspires other leaders and lifts people up to do good as well. I believe Ray Lewis did an exceptional job at doing this. He communicated very well and spoke with confidence which allowed the team to be inspired to rally together. Truly a chilling motivational speech. I believe what made this speech chilling though was the man and the leader Ray Lewis was.

Howdy, this is Raymond Perez and the video that I chose was about the best basketball player in the world, LeBron James. This video details an interview with LeBron James on his leadership style, what he has done to be a leader, and how he is improving every day. The concise and to-the-point answers and responses make this clip very prominent and credible because he gives examples and shows how he is a leader in many ways. For LeBron, he has always been a leader wherever he has been, and this is something he knows and recognizes so instead of shying away from the spotlight he welcomes it. His confidence and his willingness to adapt and take on responsibility all the time allow him to take the burden off everyone else and even make it seem like a strength. The amazing and relentless communication skills he possesses with not only his teammates, but his family as well give him and those around him the best chance to succeed because they all know what they need to do for maximum output. Trust is big with LeBron James because that is how he creates bonds and connections with his teammates and family. By creating strong connections, he allows others to believe in him and follow whatever he does regardless of if the outcome is negative or positive at the time. Lastly, we have execution where James goes out and does what he says he will do instead of just preaching it he comes through on his promises and delivers. Overall, these are some of the key and notable characteristics LeBron James possesses that make him a great leader today.

I chose this clip of Edson Alvarez because I feel like it shows what a great leader does when someone in your team is being brought down. In this clip, a U.S. player was making fun of Diego Lainez’s size, signaling how short he was when they were in confrontation because of a called foul. Edson Alvarez then comes and confronts the U.S. player and states his anger and tells him why he isn’t picking on someone his size. Edson Alvarez might not be the best player, but sometimes the best player is not the leader. He is a very vocal player and always rallies the team together to perform to the best of their abilities. This is just one instance of how he never lets an opponent make one of his teammates feel inferior. He always comes to the defense of his teammates and isn’t scared of standing up for his team. Edson’s size also helps his leadership capabilities, being tall makes him a much bigger stature and able to stand up to any opponent. His biggest leadership qualities are being vocal, passionate, resilient, and putting his team first.

For this first assignment, the leader I chose to share is Dave Lovell, a world-class head MMA coach whose main fighter is current UFC Welterweight Champion, Leon Edwards. In between rounds, you can see Coach Dave with a great sense of urgency and compassion. Going into the 5th and final round, Dave’s fighter was down 3-1 in rounds and he could see that his fighter was starting to look defeated. He tells Leon the reality and that he needs a “finish” to win the fight and to stop feeling sorry for himself. As he is telling this to his fighter and giving him water simultaneously, you can see Coach Lovell visibly shaking because he cares and has faith in his fighter. With roughly 50 seconds left in the final round, Leon landed a head kick KO to win the belt, it also makes for a fantastic story because his nickname is “Rocky Leon Edwards”. To see a coach that can be as real as possible and show that much love to their athlete is the type of passion I want to have in my life path.

I choose to look at one of the greatest sport leaders of all time, Ray Lewis. Many knew Lewis to be a dominating force on the field, and he was clearly a leader for the Baltimore Ravens in his time there, leading them to two Superbowl victories. In this video he pinpoints on a leadership attribute that I consider to be crucial for any good leader. That trait is to serve those who you are leading. Being a servant leader means that you understand that its not about you. That as a leader you are tasked with elevating those who are under you. That part of your job is to make sure that everyone below you is growing. By serving those you lead, you gain their respect, their admiration, and their attention when you speak. Servant leadership means you have to humble yourself and care for others above yourself. Having been led by people who were servant leaders I can say with certainty that it is always easier to follow someone, when you can definitively say they want to see you succeed.

Adrian Munguia – Vincent Kompany https://youtu.be/HKSQJClAfmM

As a lifelong soccer fan, I’ve had the opportunity to watch many players wear a captain’s armband and heavily impact a game through their leadership. While I could write this assignment about many hundreds of gifted leaders I’ve watched on the pitch over the years, for this assignment, I decided to write about former Manchester City F.C. captain and current coach for Burnley F.C. Vincent Kompany. As stated in the video, as a player and coach, Vincent Kompany always utilized his innate ability to manage his teammates and players. While he wore a captain’s armband for most of his playing career, I was genuinely amazed by Vincent Kompany’s determination to lead even before his promotion to team captain. As he states in the video, Vincent Kompany always stayed true to himself and utilized his communication skills to encourage and manage his teammates, ultimately landing him the team captain position for Manchester City F.C. in 2011. The same season he was awarded captaincy, Manchester City F.C. would go on to win the Premier League title, their first in 44 seasons which certainly reflects Vincent Kompany’s leadership on the pitch. Despite being new to coaching, Vincent Kompany’s leadership abilities have also allowed him to succeed in his first managerial job in England. His Burnley F.C. team is in first place in the English Football League Championship. His communication skills and ability to lead by example will allow Vincent Kompany to continue his rise to managerial stardom.

Dirk Nowitzki is one of the most influential leaders in sport for me because he is a hero in the eyes of every Dallas Mavericks fan. Although he won MVP in 2007, everyone remembers him for his heroics during the 2011 playoffs where he won Finals MVP.
While Dirk has some of the accolades that help showcase his ability to lead, there is so much more to him than just trophies and titles.
For example, he spent his entire career of 21 years with the Mavericks, showing his commitment to the organization and his teammates. He isn’t a flashy guy, but rather leads by example. My favorite quality of Dirk’s is that he wasn’t afraid to get help. When the Mavs signed Jason Kidd to the team for the 2011 season, many questioned Dirk’s abilities to lead. He proved that he was ok with getting help if it meant a ring. He knew what his weaknesses were and found a way to overcome them without being petty like we see many athletes do today.

Nick Saban is arguably one of the best coaches that the game of football has ever seen. He has won seven national championships and ten conference championships. He has made the University of Alabama a highly popular brand. Almost everyone is familiar with who the Alabama Crimson Tide are. I chose Nick Saban because I see him as a highly successful leader and his resume speaks for it. There are often clips of him leading his team by example, for instance, in practice, where he would often show corners the proper techniques during a practice drill. He often gets mad at his player, but that’s because he has high expectations from them. When he wants something done right, you better do it right. He knows he doesn’t need to be liked or please everyone but instead be respected by everyone. What also makes him a great leader is his experience in the game of football. He is arguably one of the most experienced and combined with his mentality; it makes him one of the best leaders in football.

I chose Ray Lewis’ famous “Lion Mentality” speech. Ray Lewis is a retired NFL middle linebacker. This speech of his is quoted a lot and has been made into a few different YouTube videos. I was assigned this speech for another class my freshman year and it stood out to me then and stuck with me. Lewis describes the reason the Lion is the King of the Jungle not because he’s the biggest, fastest or smartest. The Lion is the King because of mentality. The Lion doesn’t care about the prize, it’s more for the hunt. He compared that to playing sport for the whole team, not just for the score. To be a champ you have to love the process more than the prize. Lewis states, “The Lion Mentality is Fearless courage, bravery, leadership, never wanting to surrender, willingness to fight to the death.” It’s basically about fighting hard for what you want no matter what and never giving up. Lewis was this kind of leader for the defense as a linebacker. He had a lot of responsibility and was respected and was feared on the football field. He’s using his mentality and experience to motivate and help others. All these qualities make him a strong leader.

I chose a speech by Larry Fitzgerald where he talks about leadership through sports and how he has adapted to it and embedded it into his own life. Larry Fitzgerald is one the most influential leaders in my opinion. His actions on and off the field have proven that he is one of the best to play the game of football as a wide receiver but also be a strong leader for the team and for the community. Being from Arizona I was able to see lots of the community outreach and work he did around the state, working hard off the field for the fans and those who needed help or guidance. Now that he is no longer playing in the NFL he continues his community work and is also a part owner in the Phoenix Suns organization and is proving to be a great leader there as well and overall a great business man. Larry Fitzgerald is a great person to look up to as a role model, and one that you can use as a reference for a leadership style. His strong personality and passion for the game made him a great captain for the Arizona Cardinals, and a great mentor for the younger players.

As an avid fan of the Dallas Stars and the NHL community, I have chosen Mike Modano as a motivating and effective leader. The following speech is from his induction into the National Hockey Hall of Fame in 2014. With a history of hockey experience beginning at the minor leagues, extending into twenty-one seasons in the NHL and an Olympic games appearance, Modano has a respected following from fans and fellow teammates. As a three-year captain and 1999 Stanley Cup winner, Modano has effectively led individuals both on and off of the ice. As seen in his 2014 HOF induction speech, Modano has a very empathetic and communicative approach to his audience. He shares his passion and humbleness through his appreciation towards every coach, teammate, and individual that has made his career successful and possible. Seen both on and off the ice, Modano is also a teacher. Mike Modano leads not only as a role model but also leads to example to many athletes in the hockey community. With a devotion to the game of hockey and the surrounding hockey community, I view Mike Modano as a sincere and genuine leader in everyday life.

The leader that I chose for this assignment is Tim Tebow. Tebow is widely known as one of the greatest leaders in college football history and in his prime when he was in the NFL. In the video that I have linked below, Tebow realized how to be a leader from a very young age. In his first little league baseball game, he instantly saw how to not be a leader and it allowed him to see how a true leader acts. Tebow allows himself to truly be himself and that allows him to lead by his faith. He shares his faith with everyone and leads by the same example that we see Jesus lead by in the Bible. Leaders can come in many different ways and have many different personalities; however, true leaders are able to gain everyone’s respect. Tebow realizes that you cannot make everyone like you, but you can try to gain respect from those around you. Tebow has become such a role model in this society and is someone who truly has a large following. He stands firm in what he believes, despite what people say about him. Tebow is very sincere and genuine in all that he does, which allows people to see that he is a very real person. He is determined, driven, and a huge competitor. He will fight for the people that are on his team and wants to make a lasting impact as a leader.

I chose Inky Johnson’s story because of his work ethic and his passion for sports and life. Inky had a great story and his faith is has always been strong and he is a firm believer, I really liked how he quoted scripture at the beginning of his video. I’ve listened to his story about his injury and his childhood and how it made him have the type of passion he does to this day. Inky was a great leader because he lead by example and he worked for everything he got, his story of his childhood of racing street pole to street pole when he was 7 years old is a testimony of his passion for wanting to better himself and achieve his goals which were to play at a D1 football program. Inky proved a lot of people wrong when he proved he could play football at the D1 level, and he had great success at the University of Tennessee. His leadership and faith didn’t let his life altering injury change his personality and I find that amazing and why he’s such a great leader and motivational speaker. Inky’s injury was a life altering operation, and derailed his career path to the NFL but it opened up new doors and opportunities to be one of the best motivational speakers. Inky wasn’t just a leader on the field but off he provided for his family and was the first to attend college and graduate, his high school had more drop outs then it did graduates, his passion and determination to chase and obtain his goals is why he is the best and a great leader. Inky Johnson’s story has inspired millions of people to this day.

Kobe Bryant is a world known leader when it comes to basketball, being a father, and friend. Kobe is a 5 time NBA champion, an 18 time all star, and inductee of the Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. I chose Kobe because he is known for his “mamba mentality” which means that in order to be successful you must outwork not only yourself but everyone around you as well. Kobe was very passionate about basketball and had a vision for the future of basketball. He embodies all of the 10 aspects of what it means to be an effective leader in elite sports. He was a great communicator when it came to helping his team accomplish their goals. His teammates and coaches gained a sense of trust when it came to putting Kobe on the court and having him on their side. I would say that his strongest aspect would be how he built togetherness. He realized that in order for him to be successful his team must be successful and that is when he would step up as a leader and build team cohesion.

In a world that wanted everyone to adapt to its ideals, Nelson Mandela made everyone adapt to him. Using his passion for peace, Mandela brought a country and a world to adapt to equality. Mandela even spent almost 30 years in prison fighting for reform. Despite the awful food, abuse, and horrible conditions he faced, his spirit was never broken. After being freed, he spent more time fighting for racial equality in Africa. He was eventually elected president in 1994, serving as South Africa’s first black president. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 for his work on reform. One of the most well known politicians, and leaders, in world history, Mandela’s leadership qualities are something everyone can learn from. An excellent communicator, and a man who was passionate for what he fought for, we could all take a page out of the Mandela book.

    Nathaniel Evans,
I picked this clip because Coach Wooden is someone I greatly aspire to be more like. He is one of the greatest coaches of all time and understood what leadership was all about. He believed that if one did everything to the best of his/hers ability that they would succeed in what ever they tried. He taught his players not only how to be better players but also men. He is know for never going into a season expecting to win but preparing in such a way that he one many championships. I believe all 10 characteristics of a leader can be seen in Wooden. He was a man who never wavered from his beliefs and constantly pushed individuals to work together. He was constantly making hard decisions and learning from his mistakes. He built the UCLA basketball program because he had a vision of what it could be.

My biggest motivator would have to be David Goggins. He is known as the toughest person in the world. One thing I like about him is that he tells the world and reminds people who and what we can be. Sometimes in my sport I run low on motivation and determination but then I can think about David Goggins. His quotes saying stuff about doing the work when you dont want to or when. I have read his book and heard his stories and its phenomenal to hear what he has done is amazing. David has shown me that there really isn’t anything I cant do. I have been a very successful in swimming because I have learned a lot from him. Goggins makes me want to be more and do more with my life. like his first book says “can’t hurt me”

An effective leader that I find motivating is Tim Tebow. Throughout his athletic career, Tebow has consistently brought the people around him to work towards a common goal. Furthermore, he accomplished this despite his peers’ very different backgrounds and motives. Even outside the world of sports, Tebow has spread his influence across millions of people with his inspiring words. As he states in the video, people look to leaders who have passion and courage, and those are two main characteristics that he possesses. Amongst those qualities, I feel that Tebow has a maturity level that is incredibly immense, as he doesn’t allow others to waiver his own thought process. Tebow has spent a lifetime worth leading different groups at the collegiate, professional, and recreational levels which has given him great insight into what it takes to become a more effective leader. I highly recommend that y’all take a look at this short video, as I believe it gives amazing insight into the leader role.

  • Jaden Hamilton

The leader I picked today is Augie Garrido, the late Texas Longhorns baseball coach. I have seen many clips of his speeches and how revered he is around baseball and sports. He expected maximum effort from everyone and knew how to pull the best out of all his players. Some will say he is too harsh, but he wanted them to leave everything on the field because that is what the game calls for and what he did too. He led his teams by holding people accountable and ensuring everyone knew the expectations before the season, game, or even rep started. His leading skills speak for themselves with his longevity in the sports world, his wins, and how many great ball players he sent to the next level. For these reasons, he will always stand out as one of the best leaders.

When I think of the of the most motivating and effective leader in the sports world my mind automatically thinks of Carles Puyol. Puyol was a young signing at world famous soccer club FC Barcelona. He was named captain at the start of the 03-04 season and served in that spot till he retired in 2014. Puyol step up to the task and was the most successful captain in the clubs history. He is a effective leader for many reasons. On the field he stayed clam and let his performance do all the talking. Also, he wold stand up for his teammates by being the voice of reason on the emotion fill soccer pitch. Off the pitch he was a role model and never did anything which would negatively affect the club. I think Puyol is the best captain the soccer world has ever seen and the clip linked below sums up the reason why.

This clip of Eric Thomas is one of my favorite motivational videos I have probably ever watched. I first heard about it when I was still in high school and to this day I will still watch it from time to time when I need a little kick in the butt. What makes him so effective is his ability to relate to others. Everyone has been in some tough situation whether it was major or small. Everyone has also wanted something or desired a dream. He is so effective because he has been there. He’s been there when no body was watching and no one thought you could succeed. So he knows what it takes to do something. Nothing in life that’s worth anything is easy. That’s the beautiful thing though. Being able to work and achieve a goal is one of the most gratifying feelings in life. That’s what makes him so effective is because he can relate and motivate off of past life experience.

A great leader who is very effective is David Goggins. He does an amazing job at motivating, which I believe is one of the key qualities of being a leader. Motivation is deeper than most people think. Anyone can motivate somebody who is already self-motivated, but a true leader can motivate those who are not self-motivated. Goggins does a great job leading by example as well. He shows people what they should be doing, rather than just telling them. The reason I decided to include this clip is because it does more than just lead people in the right direction. It teaches them to reach their full potential and push in the right direction. Goggins has created many leaders simply through his own leadership.

I think one of the greatest leaders the world has ever seen is Queen Elizabeth II. During her almost 71 years as Queen, she was able to do participate/lead several remarkable events. One of her greatest and most accomplished attributes during her time as a leader, was her ability to be a teacher. Not only was she in charge of the Monarch and teaching her family how the Monarch runs, she taught the world confidence, communication, and even building trust between herself and surrounding nations. She was also very passionate about her job. In fact, Queen Elizabeth has been named the most well-traveled Brit because of her passion to fly to several countries and meet with several world leaders. She often brought England together, cared for the citizens, and made each individual feel important. The Queens leadership to the throne and to England will be taught for centuries to come.

    Jadon Vann – Kobe Bryant

When thinking about a true definition of a leader, my mind always takes me to the late great, Kobe Bryant. Growing up I saw a lot of Kobe on TV, and as I got older, I started to study his game. I quickly learned about the Mamba Mentality, which is being the best version of yourself, and not allowing anything to stop you. Kobe had a little bit of every leadership quality that there is, but I think the one that stuck out the most is the passion he had. No one was going to stop Kobe, he was going to outwork you and let you know about it too. In the video, he first talks about having a vision. A vision to figure out a way through his limitations to continue to be effective on the court. The constant communication with his teammates in this clip, telling them where to be, and what to do is so typical of Kobe, and it just shows just how much of a leader he is. He would even test his teammates with his drive, and if they didn’t meet the standard of play, he wanted, he would always let them know. No one was going to outwork Kobe, and being a leader was a part of that. Kobe demanded greatness from everyone around him, and through the years he built trust with his teammates. He was just himself, a guy who was going to challenge you every day, and that is why I think Kobe is such a powerful leader.

    Vince Lombardi
Vince Lombardi is a great example of a leader in the sport industry. Not only was his leadership style effective helping him to win 5 NFL championships including the first 2 Super Bowls. Lombardi was know to be super dedicated and a workaholic. A leader needs to be dedicated to what they are involved in because if they are not involved and dedicated then why should they expect their followers to be. His work ethic and views on hard work and dedication are inspiring to anyone who is trying to succeed at anything. Players looked up to him and followed what he said because he inspired them and he had the track record to show that his way worked.
This clip is an inspiring speech given by Lombardi talking about what goes into football. He mentions dedication, love, and spirit. The speech is insipring to anyone who plays football or wants to play football because it talks about how much more football is than just football. I think it shows how great a leader Lombardi is because it shows how he felt about football and how important it was to him. He belived football was a way of life and he lists traits he expects from players in order to get the victory they all want. The speech is very inspiring and is a great demonstration of how insipring Lombardi was.

I think that Drew Brees is someone who will always be remembered as a leader. Drew is someone who doesn’t look like they are built to be a quarterback in the NFL. Yet he has surpassed that and holds some records in the NFL and even has a Super Bowl win in 2010 over the Colts. Brees is someone who plays from their heart and motivates others around him to challenge their selves. He doesn’t listen to what others think about him, he goes out and proves them wrong. In this Video, I have attached, Drew Brees giving a pregame motivational speech in the huddle. This is something that he always did and can find many videos on. This a great way for him to get the guys pumped up and focused for the game. Telling his teammates that he believes in them and that they are capable of doing great things. He is a person who has shown the sports world that he is a great leader and motivator.

The leader I have chosen for this assignment is former Astros shortstop Carlos Correa. In the video I have uploaded you can see Correa giving pitcher Framber Valdez a pep talk at the mound (0:53). The clip is from game six of the 2020 World Series, a game which the Astros were facing elimination. Prior to the conference between Correa and Valdez, Valdez had thrown six successful innings but had just walked Yandy Diaz of the Rays who began yelling at Valdez after drawing the walk. Correa immediately took control of the situation by going to the mound to consult his pitcher. To me this shows multiple forms of leadership. For one it shows Valdez that the team has his back when an opponent starts chirping at him. Additionally, it helps Valdez remain calm and focused on the task at hand which is getting out of the inning instead of getting distracted by the opposing team’s taunting. After the mound visit Valdez was able to induce an inning ending double play. This is one of the many times Correa portrayed himself as a leader during his tenure with the Astros, and a reason why he is widely considered a leader in the baseball industry.

When I think of great leaders in the field of sport, I immediately think of coach Nick Saban. Coach Saban has all but proven to be a masterful leader, and his record every year shows that. I chose this clip, because Saban specifically speaks about where and how he gained his leadership qualities. In the clip, it is also mentioned that Saban is listed in Forbes as one of the greatest leaders in history. When it’s all said and done, I believe Nick Saban may be considered the greatest college coach of all time. Saban gives credit to his parents, and says that his parents taught him that he should be someone that others could emulate, but also remain compassionate and care for others. I think that lesson given to him is one that greatly encompasses what it means to be a leader. Setting the right example for others, but also caring for others and tending to their needs.

When the word “leader” comes to mind, I think Phil Knight is at the top of the food chain. For me on a personal level and as someone who wants to start my own business in the sports industry, Phil Knight just stands out to me as a leader and owner of a very successful company. I chose this clip of Phil Knight doing an interview on Good Morning America to let people watch him giving a little bit of background to his journey and the book he wrote on how he got to where he is now. Being the founder of the world’s most well-known sporting goods company is quite a stage for someone to lead. As the founder of Nike, Knight has had to be open minded and adapt over the years as modern sports and technology advance. His open way of running a business and putting faith in others to get the job done is quite impressive. Knight once quoted “Don’t tell people how to do things, Tell them what to do and let them surprise you with their results.” Knight has always been a creative mind and his perspective to lead his company in that same fashion is the sole reason that Nike is the leader in the industry and will continue to be for years to come.

When deciding on one leader to pick for this assignment I naturally felt drawn to picking a military leader such as General Patton, General Milley or General McChrystal. However, I thought more about the person that had a direct effect on me with leadership. The person I picked was Dr. Jordan Peterson. Dr. Peterson is a profound academic who has taught at the University of Toronto, has gone on to release New York Times bestselling books and has gone on to be a motivational and academic speaker.

How Dr. Peterson had a leadership effect on me was him being able to convince me to go back to school for esports. Previously, I attended Texas A&M in 2010 and later, stopped school to go work full time. Dr. Peterson led me to believe in myself to quit my management job during 2020 to try out for Blinn College Esports. Life as a student athlete did not allow me to be able to keep my full time office job, so I worked nights on Northgate. The phrase he mentioned in this exact video which motivated me to go back to school after getting comfortable with the money that a full time management job provides was “Its a luxury to pursue what makes you happy, its a moral obligation to pursue what you find meaningful. It might require sacrifice… you have to do it strategically.”

I then took that to enrolling at Blinn to being able to tryout and make the roster on their varsity esports team, to transferring back to Texas A&M and becoming the president of Texas A&M Esports to implement what I have learned.

For my video clip, I chose Mel Robbins as an effective leader that I find inspiring and motivating. Mel Robbins is an motivational speaker and writer that empowers and encourages people all around the world to take control of their lives. One main quality that Robbins possesses that makes her an effective leader is that she is a great communicator. She is clear and concise with her messages and definitely doesn’t sugarcoat anything. As a leader, she tells people what they NEED to hear, rather than what they want to hear. Another quality Robbins possesses is that she is a teacher rather than a teller. She leads by example and is a role model for everyone. She comes from a history with a lot of depression, failure, and discouragement and is able to be a mentor for others that are dealing with the same circumstances and teaches them how to take control of their lives. The last quality that makes Robbins an effective leader is that she is simply passionate. Her speeches and writing clearly demonstrate her passion for leadership and teaching others to not settle for a mediocre life. Mel Robbins has helped me significantly in hardships I’ve experienced and having the mentality of, “What is this teaching me to better myself moving forward?”

This is a video of Ray Lewis giving a speech at the International Economic Forum of The Americas. he is talking about authentic leadership and, ultimately, how we have leaders in low-income areas that are being turned into followers of things they don’t need to be followers of because of lack of attention from the World Stage. But in this paragraph, the point isn’t really the speech itself; it is about why Ray Lewis, a former football player, gets this platform in the first place. So I chose these clips to you you an example of Ray Lewis’s leadership. Now the qualities that got him here are the next point. First of all, he has always been an outspoken leader of any team he has been on, and you can see this in virtually any google search of Ray Lewis that you do. He also has many of the qualities that we talked about in class. He is a very passionate person about anything that he does. whether it’s football, his faith, or a world economic forum. Next, he’s a great communicator and leader with his actions. he gives others encouragement, and in actions, he leads the ravens in tackles for the season fourteen times. these are just a couple of exceptional qualities that he has that got him to this forum. Overall he’s a fantastic leader that doesn’t just let his actions speak for him but also teaches and brings others into his leadership.

Thinking of iconic leaders or great role models, Bradley Beal is most likely not the first name to come to mind. While he isn’t the first leader that comes to mind when I hear the term, his speech to his AAU team is the first clip to be thought of when hearing about a motivating leader.
In this clip, Beal rips apart his AAU team that had a poor demeanor and attitude in the first half of their basketball game. He emphasizes the importance of having a good attitude while utilizing your talents. Beal blasts his young team and does what any leader should do, and that’s having passion while making others aware of what is needed for success. He mentions that the lack of using your talents and gifts is not the right decision and it “will be taken from you”.
Beal exemplifies many traits of a leader such as enthusiasm, authenticity, and wisdom. Most importantly, Beal highlights why he is qualified to be motivating his team. He lays out the harsh facts that if the young players want to be in the NBA one day, they have to guard him, which none of them can. He goes on to say that being able to have yourself and family living a good life comes from hard work.
The explicit reality check that Bradley Beal gives his AAU team is a concrete example of his leadership and passion.

    Nicholas Ebdon- Kobe Bryant

Kobe Bryant is one of the greatest leaders of all time. His dedication to the game of basketball will never be replicated. In this video, Kobe talks about how being a leader is not always glamorous. Sometimes you have to be brutally honest for the sake of improving someone or something. He mentions how you have to hold people accountable which is very important to make sure everyone is playing their part to the best of their abilities. Kobe was know for being the first one in the gym and the last to leave which definitely set an example for anyone that saw his work ethic. His leadership exceeded the NBA as he went on to coach his daughter and write multiple books including “The Mamba Mentality” which was very motivating to reading. Kobe’s greatness through leadership both on and off the court will live on through every person who gives it their all and leaves everything on the court in whatever they are doing.

For my video clip, I chose a clip on Michael Phelps. In this video, Michael Phelps explains how he wanted to be great and he knew that it wasn’t going to be handed to him. Achieving the title of one of the best swimmers to ever dive into the water doesn’t just naturally fall into someone’s lap. The video serves as a motivational video as well as just describing Michael’s work ethic to be great. Michael Phelps was a team player. He was an amazing athlete with insane God given talents. He led Team USA in many Olympics’ and was always named team captain of the men’s swimming team. His insanely dedicated work ethic and the longevity of his extremely successful career made him a very well respected and trustworthy leader. Phelps is extremely passionate about the sport of swimming and dedicated his life to becoming arguably the best male swimmer that the sport has ever seen, along with the most decorated Olympian ever. Everyone knew when it came down to it, Michael Phelps wasn’t going to back down. He would give you his all and do whatever was best for him and his team. Anyone that has a tie to swimming knows who Michael Phelps is and his name will forever be included in the “who is the GOAT” conversations. Phelps influenced many young and up-coming swimmers and he will be known as the best swimmer for a very long time.

Rafael Nadal, one of the greatest legends of the sport of tennis, I believe is the example of an outstanding leader. His sportsmanship and well-rounded character has made him one of the most admired professional athletes. Throughout his career, he has demonstrated leadership qualities of effort, respect, dedication, humbleness and toughness. Rafael Nadal established his own Academy in the town in which he grew up in to give students from all over the world the opportunity to play tennis and develop their character simultaneously. In the video I selected, he gives a speech for the first graduating class and emphasizes the importance of being a good person. He acknowledges the importance of being a great athlete and working hard for your goals but stresses how surrounding yourself with good influences has an impact on your success. Rafael Nadal has proven his technical skills as a successful tennis athlete but his ethical character has outshone. He is known to play every point like it is his last and his warrior spirit inspires millions globally while he remains humble and true to his roots.

The person that first came to my mind when asked of a leader that I find motivating was Nick Saban. As a huge college football fan all I’ve heard my whole life was Nick Saban is one of the greatest college football coaches of all time. Now a title like this coming from not just your own fans but even from your rivals fans is not common at all. I choose this clip in particular because it is one of the most in depth speeches Saban has made. He describes what makes a leader a leader and ties it in with how he has been able to lead Alabama into one of the best college football dynasties of all time. Saban is a battle tested leader and proves this every single year when his football team is still the team everyone wants to beat. He has to take in 17 and 18 year old boys and turn them into strong minded men that will have to face up to 26 year old men. With college coaching it is a necessity to have leadership qualities to have a good football team and Nick Saban has been at the top of that list for the last 10 years.

Lewis Hamilton, not only represent driving for Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team, but representing as the first African American to compete in Formula 1. His views as a leader for his team are different goal settings. His effective leadership in respect, commitment, and bravery show how well he works within his team and represent a sport diversity. He does not think about “championship,” but bringing out the best of you. In my perspective, he supports his team as much as he supports his fans, including coming from a diverse background. He recognizes and has the vision and commitment to equality and diversity and actions in attempting to improve both in F1. One of the greatest thing about his personality is he chooses to recognize others rather than finding himself as the only person from a diverse background. As an effective leader, he has in own vision.

When I think of a leader the first person who comes to my mind is Tiger woods. To me tiger woods embodies all of the qualities that make someone a leader, he very well spoken, and on top of that has a mental game that is unmatched not only within the game of golf but any sport or athlete i can think of. Although Tiger did have ups and downs throughout his life and career he has always been able to bounce back better than ever such as his win of the masters in 2019 after battling injuries and personal issues. these comebacks show dedication and his hard work ethic which many who watch him can learn from. In the video clip i included he is accepting the honor to be in the golf hall of fame and in that speech he talks about many hardships he battled and felt like giving up but never did because he always knew he had something to prove. watching that motivates me to get up and continue to work hard in order to achieve my goals no matter what is thrown at me. No matter how much he wins he is always humble about it and even has created various groups and opportunities to get kids in the game of golf in low income areas and offers scholarships to those kids in hopes they receive a better life than they would with no guidance.

I believe that JJ Watt is a great leader because of all of his work on and off the field. Leadership is about hard work, commitment, community, trust, having heart, and leading by example, all characteristics that JJ possesses. From a football perspective, JJ went from being booed at the draft to a Houston fan favorite because of his hard work and commitment to his team and his city. He won multiple awards and led the Texans to their most successful seasons yet. While being the most dominant defensive player for multiple years in a row, JJ always made time to help the city he loved and called home, especially in 2017 with Hurricane Harvey. His efforts to relieve the city were heard throughout the country, and the time and energy he put into helping Houstonians is something the city will never forget. Words are great, but JJ Watt went into action to prove himself who he was to Houston both on and off the field, and did so successfully, becoming the most beloved football player the city has had.

As a kid growing up in Texas and watching the Houston Texans play on Sunday, I will never forget the impact and leadership J.J. Watt had for his team and his community. He has always done nothing but be a great guy on and off the field. On the field he is a 3 time and back to back defensive player of the year. Along with that, he won the Walter Payton Man of the Year, the most prestigious award in all of football. His off-the-field relief help for Hurricane Harvey was one of the things that really stood out. He donated and raised millions to help Houston and the surrounding areas after the awful hurricane hit the gulf shore. He is truly a selfless man. J.J. shows up to work every day and not only does his part but inspires others to do the same, as you can see in the video.

When I think of a leader in sport one of the top names that pops into my mind is Kobe Bryant. The short clip gives us a look into what Kobe believes is leadership and how he leads. He is very adamant about holding others accountable. He doesn’t believe in giving people hugs and apologies. He wants to know that you know you messed up and are capable of fixing it the next time around. Kobe has a lot of characteristics that you would find in leaders of any industry. Some of those characteristics include: accountability, he holds others accountable but especially himself, candor, he wasn’t afraid to share his opinions no matter how awkward or mean he came off as, and he was individualistic, he always wanted to be himself no matter what others thought, he had a famous quote saying “I don’t want to be the next Michael Jordan, I only want to be Kobe Bryant.”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nwEqw5NsIlY

For my assignment, I would like to discuss Coach Mike Krzyzewski, or Coach K, who just retired from coaching Duke Men’s Basketball after 42 seasons. Coach K is known for many things, most of them being his accomplishments such as win total or national championships, but one of his most well known qualities is that he was a fantastic leader and mentor. Many of Coach K’s former players have talked about his influence on their athletic talents, but also on their character as public figures and as young men. Stories have been told about Coach K’s ability to reach players from all backgrounds and instill his wisdom and knowledge about basketball and life into them.
One of the most prominent story tellers is former NBA and Duke player, JJ Redick. JJ is a very intelligent person who is well traversed in the intricacies of basketball, however he was known to be quite widely hated when he was in college. He has talked about Coach K on numerous occasions, and always has the best to say about Coach K’s teachings and leadership. Coach K greatly impacted JJ Redick, as well as every male basketball player at Duke over the last 42 years.
Coach K used his experiences at West Point to establish himself as great person and leader first, then as a basketball coach. He instilled great fundamental principles in his players, as well as helped them grow into class-act people. He showed his emotion on the sidelines of each game, but that was only a fraction of the passion he has for teaching and the game of basketball. He started every season with the highest of enthusiasm, and breathed life and energy into everyday he spent at Duke. Coach K made sure that come game time, his players we at their absolute best physically, emotionally, and mentally, and when his players left the university that they were full of character, integrity, and honor.

For my assignment I would like to use Drew Brees. Drew Brees was a spiritual leader with a vision of success. Through his tone, you could feel his burning desire to motivate his team to success. He was not only successful on the field: a super bowl winner and an all time passing leader, but he was recognized for his passionate way of building a locker room atmosphere that anyone would want to play for. He built cohesion and made anyone believe in themselves to the fullest. I believe a leader should have the burning passion to succeed and should be able to communicate it through his actions or words. Drew Brees was great at both.

I chose JJ Watt because I love his leadership style. I love his energy and how he hypes everyone up and gets everyone ready to go. He also sets an excellent example on and off the field and his teammates follow. He has been consistent and hasn’t changed his attitude in years. J.J. Watt is considered a good leader because of his strong work ethic, dedication to his team and community, and ability to lead by example. He is known for being a positive influence in the locker room and for being a vocal leader on and off the field. He also has a strong sense of community and has been involved in a number of charitable endeavors, which has helped to create a positive image of him as a leader. Additionally, he consistently performs on the field and is known for his work ethic and perseverance. These factors have made him a respected leader among his teammates and the larger sports community.

I chose Paul Tagliabue, the former commissioner of the National Football League. Tagliabue completely change the game of football in his progressive efforts in his time as commissioner. “Expansion, labor peace, new stadiums, international operations, unprecedented television coverage and revenues, internet and new technology development are just some of the successes accomplished during his tenure. The NFL is now not only the template for success among sports leagues, it is the standard by which all other leagues aspire.” (PFHOF, 2020) This summer I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Tagliabue during my summer internship. He spoke on a panel that honored players and contributed to the Black College Football Hall of Fame. I learned so much about the influence HBCUs had on the NFL beginning in the 1960′s and how big of a role Tagliabue played in increasing support of Black Players in the 1980′s and 90′s. I admire him so much and hope to influence the NFL in similar ways,

The leader that I chose for this discussion is Elon Musk. Although he can be considered a controversial figure at times and aspects of his work and personality have sparked much discussion, I believe that his overall notability and the image he has created for himself as a leader and as a pioneer of industry outweigh personal opinions that people may have on the actual concepts of his products.
Elon Musk embodies most if not all of the themes that we discussed in class for leadership. He clearly has vision and has been an innovator on many fronts with the invention of both his products and multiple companies that have revolutionized technology and transportation. The second theme, be yourself, is also evident in his personality and behaviors. Musk is without a doubt a quirky individual, however he does not mask his quirks, attributes, or beliefs and is very vocal, especially online, about all of these things. He is committed, as mentioned in theme three, and demonstrates this through his intense work ethic and the drive he has to put everything into his company. As mentioned in the video and some of his interviews, he has at times considered himself to be even too dedicated to his work. Next, he is open, demonstrating theme four. This theme requires being open-minded and positive. Musk is clearly open-minded in having jump started so many unique ideas, even including space travel in his endeavors. He is also very positive about many of his ventures, as you can see on his twitter account. He exhibits the fifth theme of communication through his communication with the public and with fans of his. He is very active in conversation online and has even engaged in conversations with fans of his about the actual science and design processes behind things that are way out of my personal realm of understanding. He shares details of what he is up to, including when the things he is up to sometimes fail as he has shared several posts online about test runs or projects not going according to plan. I believe that this same method of sharing information and being an active inventor and designer in his company alongside employees is the same way that he demonstrates theme six of being a teacher. His passion, theme seven, is evident in his dedication and ability to put so much effort into his innovation. Next, togetherness and decisiveness are necessary to create a company with the strength and power that he has generated. Finally, he has managed to build trust in at least some level of a large group of people as there is a large following of his products and businesses.

The person I chose that I believe truly embodies leadership is Dak Prescott. Although, Dak didn’t finish the season as he or Cowboys fans would have liked it still can’t take away from the fact that he makes a great leader. Not only does he lead on the field, but he also leads off the field for example he’s been nominated for the Walter Payton Man of the Year award twice now. This award is giving to an NFL player who has helped the community in many different ways than just football. Some aspects that make Dak a great leader is his confidence, and his ability to get others to follow him. Everyone on the Cowboys love him and will always follow him into battle. Another thing that makes him a good leader is accountability, such as he always takes blame when something is his fault never letting his team get blamed for his mistakes. There has been many times after a Cowboys lost like this most recent one against the niners that Dak come on the post game interview and says that the lost is on him. This leadership does not go unnoticed by his teammates which is why in this video that Ceedee Lamb expresses that Dak’s leadership really helped develop him as a rookie wide receiver. It’s for these reasons that I chose Dak as my example leader. Even though his play in games can frustrate me at times I know when it comes to being a leader that there isn’t many people better at that than him.

The leader I chose was Dak Prescott. Despite not being the best athlete on the field, he is always the one to light a fire in his teammates. As a Dallas Cowboys quarterback, you will always be the most hated and watched. He doesn’t let that bother him and does whatever it takes to help the team win. He helps the community, donates and created his own cause that spreads awareness for suicide. He is always the first person at practice and the last one to leave. He is always the first one on the field for games and the last one off after he high fives all his teammates in the tunnel following the win. Might not be a great quarterback but he is a great teammate and an even better man.

    Brandon Whetzel- Deion Sanders

The leader that I wanted to choose wanted to be someone who is successful on the field and off the field. Growing up, I always heard about how good of a player he was, but I was too young to see if he was actually a good player. Recently he started a coaching job at Jackson State University and seeing him coach at a college level and being that successful must have a certain leadership quality in him to have a successful team. He recently got a job for the D1 Colorado team that was recently 1-8 and with the team moving a different direction with the program and starting to coach with Deion might be beneficial to the team. My youtube link his him talking to his new team and talking about adjustments. He talks about how leaders need to rise and take action. He also says that most players will not be here by the end of the season. Players and the coaching staff trust him with the upcoming season because he is really a true leader. That is why I picked Deion Sanders as my leader.

The leader I chose is sports agent Scott Boras. Boras is currently one of the most successful sports agents there is, specializing in the sport of baseball. He has made $191 million dollars in commission through managing playing contracts worth $3.83 billion dollars. Scott has made this possible because of his strong work ethic and passion for his field. He is known as one of the toughest negotiators around, ensuring that he gets the best deals for his clients. He is very selective of who he represents, which is why he is very tentative with his negotiations. Scott builds relationships that include support, trust, and commitment which are vital attributes in a fiduciary relationship. Getting the best deal isn’t his only goal, but instead looking out for his athletes best interest. His firm, Boras Corporation, even has their own training staff for their athletes. He does a great job of focusing on those little things along with the usual duties of a sports agent which really sets him apart from other agents in the industry. This clip is from Hard Knocks. Robert Saleh is the head coach of the New York Jets and gives an excellent speech about competing. He explains that there are four levels of competitors. The first are survivors; they do just enough to get by and are not focused on success. Next are the contenders, and contenders are motivated by external factors. Third is competitors, and competitors are intrinsically motivated. The final group is the commanders. Commanders and competitors are very similar, except commanders bring teammates with them. They are not only focused on their success, but the groups as a whole. There is at least one of each level on every team, but everyone should strive to be a commander. I thought this was a really good look into the psychology of athletes and how teams can be broken down into types of athletes.

The leader that I have chosen is the New York Giants head coach, Brain Daboll. Daboll earned the NFL Coach of the Year award in 2022; his first year as a head football coach in the NFL and first year with the New York Giants. He won this award because he was able to make significant progress with the team that had a losing record of 4-13 in the prior season. Brian Daboll’s ability to evolve and adapt are some of the qualities that make him a good leader and allowed him to be successful with this team. Additionally, he shows each of his players that he cares for them on both a professional and personal level which undoubtably strengths their trust in his leadership. Daboll is also often seen telling his team the importance of “energy and effort” and taking the game “one play at a time”. This is a quality of his coaching that I believe greatly contributes to his effectiveness as a leader as it ensures his player are disciplined in the fundamentals of the game, which helps to increase their success in high pressure situations. Furthermore, Daboll puts a great emphasis on preparation which is a fundamental characteristic of an effective leader. Lastly, I believe one of the largest factors in the success and leadership that Daboll has had thus far with the New York Giants is his passion, not only for the game but the team itself. There are many traits that make a great leader but passion is one that can’t be taught or faked which is why I believe it is one of the most important.

The leader I chose to talk about is Lionel Messi. Messi is a professional soccer player from Argentina who won the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Throughout Messi’s soccer career, he has set high standards for himself, his teammates, and other players. Messi has proven himself a great leader by playing the sport he loves with integrity, passion, and hard work. Messi has been the team captain for many of his soccer teams because he pushes his teammates to be the best version of themselves. He has inspired many people worldwide with his passing accuracy, ability to dribble, and consistent scoring abilities. He provides strong communication that helps the players be united on and off the field. Messi’s powerful leadership makes people look up to him and strive to be just like him. Messi is a leader because he not only inspires his teammates to work hard, but he inspires every young athlete to be confident and to reach their full potential.

I, Alexa Nguyen, have always looked up to Von Miller both as a professional athlete and as a leader. On and off the field he has proven countless times how powerful and passionate he is about his sport. In the clip I selected, specifically, Von Miller takes a controversial route by posting a National Football League rejected ad on social media protesting the use of turf on the football field. I find so much courage from this because he is going against a giant league that he works under.
From this video alone, Von Miller shows courage, dedication, passion, care and creativity. Von Miller was able to draw in all his passion and care for his teammates and rivals on the field by wanting to protect everyone in his sport. Furthermore, in several interviews and articles as well as statements from his various teammates, Von Miller has been proven to be a respected leader by everyone.

I Jeran Aguilar chose Lionel Messi as my great leader. Not only does he hold the record for most trophies won as a soccer player, time in and time out he has proven himself as an outstanding player, captain, and overall team leader. He does this by using his friendly personality to boost the chemistry of both him and his teammates on and off the field. Not only on the field but he is also a father, which can be said to be one of the hardest leadership roles of all. A perfect example of Messi being a great leader is his recent transfer to the MLS and joining Inter Miami. He joined the team and took the club from being a bottom team to winning the league. He accomplished this by reuniting with old players and getting close with his newer teammates. He also doesn’t hog the ball and is always willing to pass to and assist his teammates in scoring. The betterment of whatever team he is on is one of his sole goals, and to me this makes him an outstanding leader in not only soccer but sports as a whole.

I, Carson Asbery, chose David Goggins. He is probably the most motivational person I have ever heard. I recently started going to the gym a lot and it has to do with him. My girlfriend showed me who he was a while ago and ever since then anytime I see a video of him speak it gets me fired up. Sometimes when I don’t want to work out I will listen to a video or podcast of him speaking instead of music because he is someone who can give me that extra push. I think the reason he is an effective leader is because he went through a lot of struggle in his life. He was not always good at what he does and he wasn’t in the best shape of his life, but he never gave up. He knows that life is hard and he has wanted to give up like everyone else and seeing his story makes reminds me that there is always someone out there that has it worse, so I gotta stop complaining and keep going.

    Nicholas DeOliveira

Sir Alex Ferguson is known as the greatest soccer manager/coach in the history of the Premier League, some even saying the greatest manager of all time. With 38 trophies, 13 Premier League titles, 2 champions league titles he is the most decorated manager in futbol history. When looking into what made him so great, in his own words there were certain qualities that he held that proved to him were qualities that all leaders should have. In his time of managing Manchester United he has shown a consistency in his thoughts and decisions and doesn’t let things around him deter him from making the call that he believes will be the best decision. This is especially successful in times of trial. In sticking to consistency, he believed that this would help in developing in specific his players. And not only in the sense of skill with the ball, but also helping develop them as people, which helps them in the match and motivates them. And a final point that I believe helps him so much is his willingness to adapt with change. Which sounds counterintuitive to his first point, yet it goes hand and hand. When done perfectly it allows him to grow is team in a way that forces them to move towards greatness even in an industry changing so frequently as soccer. These factors are just some of the multiple concepts that he uses to be an impactful and successful leader.
