TOM COUGHLIN is the current head football coach for the New York Giants. He has been an NFL head coach for 25 years, experiencing success with both the Jacksonville Jaguars and the New York Giants. Coughlin was the first head coach in Jacksonville Jaguars history, taking over for the expansion team before their inaugural season in 1995. Incredibly, the Jaguars made the AFC championship game in only their second season as a franchise. Coughlin also was the head coach at Boston College University and led them to two straight bowl games before getting hired by the Jaguars. After his tenure in Jacksonville, Coughlin became the head coach of the New York Giants. He has since become one of the most successful and respected head coaches in the NFL.

On February 3, 2008, Tom Coughlin reached the pinnacle of his profession. He led an underdog Giants team to a remarkable win over the heavily favored New England Patriots. The 2007 Giants were a great story as they played the underdog role all year and scored major upsets throughout the playoffs. Entering the season, Coughlin was on the hot seat as the Giants suffered early exits from the playoffs in previous years. Also, his approach was not getting through to his players. He was a harsh disciplinarian and many of his players resented his style. Before the 2007 season, Coughlin decided to be more open and change his approach. He started showing more empathy and concern for his players as people. He also was more lenient. The strategy worked as the Giants won their first super bowl since 1990. Four years later, the Giants won their second Super Bowl under Coughlin also defeating the New England Patriots in a rematch. BRUCE BOCHY is manager of the World Series Champion San Francisco Giants. He was born in France and is the only Major League Baseball manager born in another country. Prior to being hired by the Giants, Bochy participated in all five postseason appearances in San Diego Padres history. He played for the Padres during their 1984 pennant winning team and managed the Padres to postseason appearances in 1996, 1998, 2005, and 2006. The 1998 Padres won the National League pennant.

Bochy is known as a players’ manager. He was able to get the most of his players in winning the 2010 World Series. The Giants were not the favorite to win and had several injuries. His Giants were very resilient in winning their first World Series since 1954. Two years later, Bochy led the Giants to a second World Series Title in 2012. Winning two World Series in three years is an amazing accomplishment considering the constant turnover of major league baseball rosters. This amazing feat was possible in part because of Bochy’s ability to get the most of his players.

Bruce Pearl

BRUCE PEARL is the current head men’s basketball coach at the University of Tennessee. Pearl has been successful in every program he has been a part of. His first elite level head coaching job was at Southern Indiana University. In 1995, he led Southern Indiana to the Division II national championship. After nine successful seasons at SIU, Pearl left to coach in Division I. He first served as head coach at UW Milwaukee for the next four seasons and led them to the Sweet 16. As a result of his success, Pearl took a position at the University of Tennessee and has since led them to five straight NCAA tournament appearances and three Sweet 16 births.

EDDIE ROBINSON was the former head football coach at Division I-AA Grambling University. He is the winningest coach in Division I-AA football history. From 1941 to 1997, Robinson was the head football coach at Grambling and accumulated over 400 victories. He had coached over 200 future NFL players. Robinson was voted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1997.

BILL BELICHICK is  the head football coach for the New England Patriots. He is considered a defensive mastermind and extraordinary leader. Known for his tremendous football strategy, Belichick has built a dynasty with the Patriots. His teams are known for precision and execution. "The Great" John Wooden

John Wooden was voted as the coach of the century for all sports. He was the most successful college basketball coach in NCAA history. He won 10 championships and was the face of UCLA basketball from 1948 to 1975. Since he retired, numerous books have been written documenting his coaching style and philosophy. He is the “gold standard” of coaches in terms of accomplishments and reputation.

Wooden was a teacher in every sense of the word. He is one of the most influential figures in all elite sports and he has made a tremendous impact in many of his player’s lives outside of basketball. Wooden believed that teacher’s haven’t taught until the student has learned. He covers many different aspects of leadership in this video below, but always comes back to the importance of being a teacher, mentor, and role model. John Wooden recently passed away on Friday June 4, 2010. He will always be remembered for his influence, service, and accomplishments on the basketball court and off.

Dennis Green was an elite level football coach for over 30 years. He was a head coach at both the college and professional levels. Green’s most notable run was in the NFL as head coach of the Minnesota Vikings from 1992 to 2001.
